How many clinical hours does the Rasmussen PMHNP require?
The Rasmussen PMHNP track requires 630 clinical hours, structured as four sequential preceptor-supervised practicum courses of 150, 150, 150, and 180 hours.
It sits inside an online MSN of 69 credits, combining online coursework, an in-person community practicum, and one weekend on-campus residency. The 180-hour final rotation is longer than the standard 150, so your last placement carries the most scheduling weight. Because the courses run in sequence, a gap in preceptor coverage in any one term delays the next.
The PMHNP specialization is CCNE-accredited at the master's level. NP specializations do not meet APRN licensure educational requirements in Alabama, Idaho, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, so verify your state first.
Why are PMHNP preceptors so hard to find?
Psychiatric mental health preceptors are scarce because there are simply fewer Master's or Doctoral prepared psychiatric providers than primary care providers, and many carry full panels with limited room to supervise.

Doesn't Rasmussen secure my PMHNP site for me?
Rasmussen has a clinical practicum coordinator who, per its own pages, helps find and secure your site and preceptor, and we work alongside that coordinator rather than replacing it.
The honest reality is that the program is designed around community-based practicums you complete near you, with the default expectation that you supply the preceptor and site. We do the sourcing and vetting so the coordinator has a ready, verified psychiatric match to formalize, and so you are not chasing behavioral health clinics on your own.
Who qualifies as a PMHNP preceptor?
A PMHNP preceptor must be a Master's or Doctoral degree-prepared nurse, and a cleared background check is required.
For psychiatric mental health rotations, we match on practice setting as well as credential, so your preceptor's caseload supports what each practicum course must document. Every preceptor we present is confirmed against the Master's or Doctoral requirement and background-check condition before you receive the match.

Placement is 1,500 to 2,500 per rotation, and you pay only when we match you to a confirmed preceptor and site.
