Two clinicals, two different searches
This is the part that catches RN-to-BSN students out. The programme does not ask you to find one preceptor and reuse them. It asks for supervised experience in two genuinely different domains, each under a qualified nurse preceptor.
NUR 4244 Public Health in Nursing
Population-level work: community assessment, prevention, and the health of a group rather than a caseload. The natural settings are health departments, community and public health programmes, school health, and outreach services.
NUR 4590 Professional Identity of a Nurse Leader
Leadership and professional practice: how a unit runs, how decisions get made, how a leader shapes practice. The natural supervisor is a nurse in a leadership or administrative role, which is a different person from the one who fits public health.
Treat them as two placements with two timelines. Students who assume one arrangement covers both discover the mismatch at registration, when the calendar is least forgiving.
What a qualified nurse preceptor means here
Rasmussen expects the experience to sit under the supervision of a qualified nurse preceptor. In practice that means someone whose licence, role and setting genuinely match the course you are registering for, not simply a nurse willing to sign. A public health nurse is the right supervisor for NUR 4244 and usually the wrong one for NUR 4590; a nurse manager is the reverse.
Confirm the accepted credentials for each course with Rasmussen before you commit to a person. It is a short conversation that prevents the expensive version of this problem, which is discovering the mismatch after the term opens.
Does Rasmussen find the clinicals for you?
Rasmussen can help students find clinicals in their community under the supervision of a qualified nurse preceptor, and for some students that support is enough. What it is not is a guarantee that a site will be waiting for you in your town on your dates. The search still begins with you, and it is bounded by what is actually available near you.
That is where the two-clinical structure bites hardest. In a smaller market, one suitable public health placement may exist and already be taken by a student from a local programme. Having a second, structurally different placement to solve at the same time doubles the exposure to that problem.
The market is the constraint, not your effort
Public health departments run small teams and take few students. Leadership placements depend on one manager having the bandwidth to supervise. Neither shortage is something persistence alone fixes, which is why starting early matters more here than in a track with abundant clinical sites.

Can I use my employer for both?
Sometimes, if the organisation has both a public health function and a nurse leader who can supervise, and if neither supervisor is your direct manager. Larger health systems can carry both; a single clinic usually cannot.
Can one preceptor cover both courses?
Rarely a good fit, because the courses assess different domains. Confirm with Rasmussen before assuming it, rather than after.
How early should I start?
Before the term you plan to register for, and earlier in a small market. Public health teams are small and leadership supervision depends on one person's bandwidth.
What if there is nothing near me?
