Virtual Clinical Routes for Rasmussen NP Students

Rasmussen's virtual immersion is a preclinical learning experience that uses simulation, telehealth, and standardized patients. It gives students structured opportunities to practice before later patient care, but it is not itself an NP practicum placement. Completing immersion does not mean that a later practicum can automatically be performed through telehealth or that its activities count as clinical hours.

Rasmussen describes NP coursework as online with clinical practicum experiences completed locally in person, plus a one-weekend campus residency. Any proposed virtual clinical component therefore needs specific current confirmation rather than an assumption based on online coursework or immersion. Ask how the course objectives, required patient care, supervision, encounter documentation, and clinical hours apply to the exact proposed arrangement.

A virtual preceptorship connects the student to a real clinical organization, eligible preceptor, defined patient population, approved technology, and active supervision plan. Depending on the course and site, activities could involve supervised telehealth encounters, case preparation, assessment, care planning, documentation review, patient education, follow-up, and feedback. The specific activity must fit the student's authorized role and current course expectations.

Remote access does not remove the site's control over patients, privacy, records, scheduling, consent, or technology. It also does not let a student practice independently. The plan should explain where the student, patient, and preceptor are located, how the preceptor observes and directs care, which system is used, when questions are handled, how work is reviewed, and how an encounter is documented for the program.

The route depends on current Rasmussen approval, the particular course, state requirements, patient location, clinical site, preceptor setup, and supervision. These factors must be assessed together. A clinician may routinely deliver telehealth and still work at an organization that does not onboard students remotely. A site may accept learners while the course requires in-person examination or other physical patient care.

Patient location deserves its own review because telehealth requirements can turn on where care is received. The student and preceptor locations can matter as well. Ask the program and site who is responsible for checking each location and credential issue. Confirm the arrangement in writing before building a schedule or expecting any activity to count toward the course.

Rasmussen lists 600 clinical hours for FNP, AGPCNP, and PPCNP, delivered through four 150-hour practicums. PMHNP lists 630 hours through three 150-hour practicums and a final 180-hour practicum. The total does not determine which activities can occur virtually. Each practicum can have its own patient, specialty, setting, skill, and supervision expectations, so students should confirm the current requirements course by course.

Psychiatric and primary care organizations may use telehealth for some routine care, but a working provider model is not automatically a student model. Pediatric, adult gerontology, family, and psychiatric experiences each have distinct populations and learning needs. Some plans may require physical patient access, while an approved blended arrangement may combine in-person days with eligible virtual activity. Start with course objectives rather than a desired remote-hour percentage.

Rasmussen provides a clinical practicum coordinator who helps students locate and secure a local site. Keep that coordinator involved when exploring virtual, blended, or physical candidates. For NP practicums, Rasmussen identifies the preceptor as a Master's or Doctoral prepared nurse. The proposed clinician and organization still need to meet the current program, course, credential, documentation, and onboarding expectations.

DNP planning follows a different hour framework. Rasmussen describes student-specific progress toward a minimum of 1,000 post-baccalaureate practice hours, so the remaining requirement can depend on prior verified hours and the individual plan. A DNP student should confirm both the remaining total and which proposed activities are eligible before relying on any virtual practice experience.
